There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” — Nelson Mandela... “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” — Frederick Douglass... Both of these quotes come to my mind when thinking or speaking about our children... I am a teaching artist... While we were in many schools to provide the things most students need in public schools to help open minds and create healthy artistic possibilities, students and teachers loved the program... In private schools, extra curriculum activities that broaden a student's mind are automatically given... Poor students never see the light of day with hopes for their future because it's been taken away... Monies have been diverted and our poorer students have been left to their own demise... Parents who work relentlessly to try and give their children a better education have been pushed aside... Our children are our future!! All children matter, not just the children who benefit already from the riches of society... Public schools must remain open and financially solvent for those who need it the most... Everyone says they are looking out for the children in poverty situations, however, they use their power to enrich those who don't need it... Wake Up America!! Let's give all children what they need to grow and learn to become productive in society... Thank you for this article and for caring about those less fortunate who also deserve the best education available... We are One Voice for a change!!

i'm familiar with this issue in particular from spending so much time in new orleans and watching the truly evil way the public schools were just closed and locked so the city could become a test case for al- charter school systems. as though this swarm of private ed advocates were waiting for the hurricane and ready when it came. but i didn't realize the unanimity among the corporate goliaths, i'm sure their reasons vary, but the distance between their worlds and the public schools, and way school-funding has always left schools in poor communities underfunded and thus at times underperforming makes it easy for them to think nice clean new charters will build a brighter future.
