At this point, enough famous boomer musicians have pulled their music catalogs from Spotify for them to form their own “We Are The World” style supergroup and cut a record bringing awareness to vaccine scarcity in developing nations. Maybe they will end up doing just that, but for now, Joe Rogan is still gainfully employed by Spotify to exclusively host his massively popular podcast on their platform.
i don't totally agree with your view that objecting to joe rogan in ways like what neil young did is the height of ineffective. boycotting trade with south africa did help end apartheid, and the cesar chavez grape boycott was effective. so if people left spotify and went to another site much the same, and then had to leave that one too because of other neil youngs, they would start to see something about how the system works and keeps on working. such things don't suffice in any way, but nor are they nothing, it seems to me. that doesn't justify liberals viewing them as the path to change, and you're right, it's not gonna change minds that are made up. but there are always new minds coming along that aren't made up yet and self interest works, god knows, on capitalists.
kagame banned all plastic bags from rwanda several years ago ( my suitcase was searched, it wasn't just for rwandans) because they were killing livestock that choked on them when they grazed in yards... now there are none. yeah gas taxes are totally regressive, but campaigns to engage citizens in habits that don't cost more but do support climate science result in better normative behaviors, don't they? like moving to all electric cars, which means the competition will lower the prices so a lot of cars can be sold to driving-loving americans. it would be better, a quicker path to change, if we could all develop a left wing analysis and change our lifestyles and vote for stacey abrams, but sadly that's not gonna happen because we understand things just from reading. pettit bridge was spectacle, spectacle is part of waking people up, isn't it?
