Hey friends, Today we’re highlighting Nora De La Cour’s latest for Jacobin magazine where she writes about the devastating and imminently avoidable impact of high stakes testing: When I taught at an alternative public school for kids with exceptional social-emotional, behavioral, and learning needs, one of my students — I’ll call him Dante — got As in every class he took. School staff would frequently elevate Dante’s extraordinary focus and commitment as an example for his peers.
I used to volunteer with my then-wife at a gifted homeschooling/unschooling outfit called "Beyond IQ", which partially addressed these kinds of issues—Profoundly Gifted children who did poorly in public schools and with standardized testing.
Every sentence of this is such a well-crafted piece of the story, and the story itself is so utterly appalling. Thank you for putting your talents to such a vital cause!
This is so incredibly infuriating and sad.
